Technology designed around teaching

James led 1:1 iPad programme launches at Shaw Education Trust and supported related education-sector work. The approach treated technology as part of teaching and organisational change, not as a uniform hardware rollout.

Sites introduced devices when leaders and staff were ready, with implementation shaped around classroom practice, accessibility and the needs of individual school communities.

Evidence and recognition

The published white paper “Are 1:1 iPad programmes worth it?” reported a 370% improvement in student performance where individual devices were combined with Technology-Enhanced Active Learning. The work also examined engagement, implementation and potential cost savings.

Recognition included a Jammie Award in 2022 and the MAT Excellence Awards Digital Innovation award in 2023. Judges highlighted the programme’s scale, sustainability and impact on opportunities for a wide range of students.
